Lights Out in South Africa

By Ian Jobling • 3/19/08

South Africa becomes more and more African all the time:

[South Africa] announced a “national emergency” on January 25, 2008 as the instability in the power grid threatened collapse of the network. The government owned utility Eskom ordered the largest mines to close and cut power to millions of homes and businesses, an emergency tactic they call “load shedding.” The mines had to stop work for five days, and then agree to cut back 10% of their usual power demands. This crisis is playing out like a chapter from Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged…

Sadly, this power problem was not new. South Africa had experienced electricity disruptions several times over the past three years, often caused by technical problems at the nuclear plant Koeberg. Earlier in January, terrified tourists at Table Mountain were trapped in cable cars in mid-air for hours due to a power outage at the plant…

Now traffic crawls to a standstill when the stoplights go out, and restaurants have to close since they can’t cook. Some industries are looking at generators or alternative sources of power, but the price may be too high for small firms. These companies may have to move offshore where they can get steady electricity or shut down. A company that makes plastic milk bottles claims it’s losing 4 million Rand per week due to the power fluctuations (approximately USD $500,000). Complaints by CEOs of the economic damage have been belittled by the government, as Trevor Manuel, the Minister of Finance referred to loss estimates as “overcooked and utter garbage.”

That’s what happens when you try to get your coal from “black female suppliers”…

Much of the problem has arisen from Eskom’s rigid interpretation of South Africa’s affirmative action program, black economic empowerment or BEE. While there was much oppression under the former apartheid system, the pendulum seems to have swung too far in the other direction. The company notonly favored black owned vendors, but moved in 2002 to a strict “hierarchy of procurement” in purchasing coal. Eskom started by sourcing coal from black female suppliers, then small black owned companies, then large black firms, then companies with pro-black practices, and then other suppliers. Only if the first supplier couldn’t accommodate would Eskom move down the chain to lower priority vendors.

…and when the power company has a “whites need not apply” policy…

Eskom has also stumbled due to lack of qualified personnel. Bowing to political pressures, the skill shortage a union warned Eskom about was ignored in favor of racial and gender quotas. The utility’s workforce was cut in half over the past 15 years, as technically competent whites were denied employment. Eskom’s HR department sent out a memo in January 2008 right before the crisis stating, “No white male appointments for the rest of the financial year.”

…and when the country is so crime-ridden and hostile to whites that they just want to leave…

South Africa is suffering a “brain drain” as skilled workers - including former Eskom engineers - continue to emigrate to countries like New Zealand and Australia. Approximately one million whites left the nation between 1995 and 2005. Most of those whom emigrated due to high crime and limited economic opportunity were productive workers between the ages of 20 and 40. As the core of the workforce continues to seek jobs elsewhere, the nation suffers as a result. A South African entrepreneur explained, “Racism in any form, when introduced into the economy, can only yield what we are now reaping. Economic chaos and failure.”

Actually, only some forms of racial preference cause chaos and failure. After all, under Apartheid, the lights worked just fine.

With respect to the crime rate, I remember hearing a few years back that Johannesburg had the highest murder rate per capita of any ciy on planet Earth. Does anyone know if that’s true? And if so where can one get those statistics?

By on 3/19/08 at 7:21 pm

One has to ask, “Whose country is this, anyway?” I know only a little bit about South African history, but my limited knowledge suggests that there was almost no population there at all when the early Dutch and English settlers came and began to make that a productive area. That brought the Blacks from much further north who came seeking employment on the farms created by the white men. Now you can see who has taken over.

This is an object lesson for us in America. Precisely the same thing will happen here with respect to both Black and Mestizo invaders if we let them take us over. They will not hesitate to take away our country and drive us out. The fact that they destroy the nation in the process, as has been done in South Africa, is only incidental and of small importance to either of them. It is of huge importance to us and our descendants!

It is not irrelevant that every other functioning nation left from the colonial period in Africa that has been turned over to Black government has been wrecked. Liberia, Congo and Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) come immediately to mind as prime examples of the disaster of what happens when Blacks take control. Zimbabwe is a particularly egregious case where a nation that was a net exporter of food is now in a state of famine and has driven out all those whites who knew how to make the farms productive.

Apartheid was wrong, but giving away our patrimony is also wrong. We must be on our guard to avoid having the US go exactly the same way as South Africa. And don’t kid yourself that it could not happen. We are bigger, but we have the same potential for failure that they had, and we have more weak sisters than they ever tolerated in their society by far.

Hello - I’m a white South African - and have a few comments. To “Dr.D”: “Apartheid was wrong, but…” - Yes in today’s upside-down world, that is the received wisdom, but it remains just as mindless and idiotic as when the first feel-good liberal spat it out.

Let me see: Apartheid was wrong because it kept a little civilized area for whites (those who make the country work) to live in without fear of savagery?; …because it had laws keeping blacks out? - Well in the last 14 years it has become crystal clear why keeping blacks out was justified. Contrary to what the black racists and liberal myth-makers say, the blacks of Apartheid SA were not deprived, they benefited in a myriad ways from living in a country kept civilized by whites: education; law & order; health & medicine, etc, etc. (So they didn’t get all whites got, but they didn’t “make” the country or pay the taxes. When whites handed the country over to blacks, they handed over a country with a First World infrastructure. Blacks weren’t left to sink or swim. Misguided whites bent over backwards to help, are still doing this!! But Blacks remain incapable of governing any civilized society. The country is being destroyed - as I write, I wonder whether I’ll be able to finish before the next power cut.

And black hatred of whites grows. The more they fail, the more they hate us. Of course, sick liberals say that that is because of our “past oppression” of them. Except that that IS A MYTH. That “oppression” was simply the righteous defence of our own against bullying and savagery. You get bullies in every society, Apartheid South Africa was no exception, but it was not built on bullying, and bullies were brought to book. Now the NEW South Africa - that is built on bullying - no justice - merely the Black majority bullying the white minority. But in the liberal dystopia that is exhilirating, sanctifying : majoritarian bullying, especially if black is right! In the USA minoritarian bullying, if black is right? Oh, I get it, black bullying is right.

To Ian Jobling: you’ve asked “how to wake whites up?” Well the main thing is to point out that Blacks are bullies, who only respect power. Maybe whites have to first experience this before they wake up.

By on 3/20/08 at 3:03 pm

Keith tells us what we can expect if Blacks take control of America. He has seen it happen in South Africa, and it is very, very bad. It has resulted in the destruction of what was previously a functioning Western society, now rapidly approaching third world status. He describes Blacks as bullies, and this is perhaps a correct characterization; they certainly show some evidence of that in this country as well. Think of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Keith takes exception to the statement that “Apartheid was wrong …” But look at what else he says, “So they didn’t get all whites got, but they didn’t “make” the country or pay the taxes.” This was not a country in which there was equal opportunity for all by any means. I was not in South Africa, and neither were most of you, but what we can talk about is what was evident to those who reported to us. They saw an extremely unequal society, a society in which there was no opportunity to advance for most of society. This is where I think apartheid was wrong.

The negative characteristics of many, even most Blacks do not make it right to prevent the advancement of those who are capable. When I say capable, I mean capable of competing on a completely level field, with no preferences shown at all. If they can show that they are just as smart and just as civilized as white folk, why should they not be allowed to live with the white folk if they want to? I think that there are some white folk we could send to live with the Blacks too! (We have some really stupid, bullying white folks too.)

So, yes, apartheid, as it was structured, was wrong. What exists today is also wrong. A better solution must be found for South Africa or it will become just another third world country. It may already be too late.

By on 3/20/08 at 4:05 pm

I have visited South Africa several times (my sister lives in Johannesburg). No disinterested observer could fail to notice that since the end of white rule, the infrastructure has almost collapsed, the crime rate has soared, the police and bureaucracy are stuffed with incompetents, the streets are thronged with surly and threatening blacks, etc. (One could go on.)

My sister can’t drive anywhere without locking herself inside the car. She’s afraid to stop at traffic lights (if they happen to be still working) in case of being “car-jacked”. She lives in a house that resembles a prison compound with security lights, a gate phone, barbed wire, and a couple of rottweilers. Her freedom to move around is thus severely restricted: she never goes out alone. Now the electricity supply is spasmodic at best. What a place to live! (She’s in line for a move to Australia).

This is the reality of living under a black administration which is ignored in the white liberal media.

By on 3/21/08 at 4:53 am

“This was not a country in which there was equal opportunity for all by any means” “The negative characteristics of many, even most Blacks do not make it right to prevent the advancement of those who are capable.”

So because under Apartheid 4 capable blacks were not given “equal” opportunity, 4 million whites should suffer all the disadvantages of accommodating all the other 40 million blacks who never (with all the advantages that guilt-ridden liberals give them) will be capable - Black Africa - proves this - just so that those 4 (or 40 or 4000) blacks are not disadvantaged? In white majority countries you may be able to accommodate them, but not in a country with a white minority. Its like the camel with first his nose in the tent, and then finally all-of-him in the tent, and all-of-you out. In South Africa those “capable” blacks are the camel’s nose. And that “nose” doesn’t lift the majority up - the majority steal your tent!

Dr.D’s sentiments could only ever arise in a white majority society, where white norms (fairness, justice) are aspired to. Of course South Africa was an unequal society. Whites (on average) and Blacks (on average) are not equal. But I deny - that because (in areas where whites alone were responsible for development - ie of Universities, of theatres, of parks, in fact of all the civilized amenities) we did not allow uncontrolled access to blacks - we therefore were unjust. That was the only way to preserve civilization (as has been made abundantly clear since 1994). And justice (as opposed to equality) demands recognition of differences: in ability, in contribution, and in behaviour.

“So they didn’t get all whites got…” because they had no right to it. But that doesn’t mean to say they got nothing. Apartheid South Africa invested millions of rands in black development - but they never used their opportunities. The only thing that has changed is that now in addition to money from South Africa’s whites, they also get it from overseas - BUT STILL THEY DON’T DEVELOP.

Apartheid may not have ensured equality, but it ensured justice. Bullies were brought to book. Crime and murder was punished. In black run South Africa crime goes unpunished because the Black Bullies are in government.

Keith,

Our hearts go out to you. We understand the nightmare that you live.

Is there anything that we Americans can do for you?

By on 3/21/08 at 8:16 am

Keith - I’ve been following events in SA for several years now. Online, of course, as I’ve never been. I am absolutely disgusted by what the ANC and their cronies have done to your formerly top notch, first rate nation. I am also sickened by the Western involvement. My nation, the USA, certainly bullied SA. The SADF was an extremely effective force in fighting communism (I guess I thought that we were anti-communist also). Now you have a government that denies memorials to Angola vets, and associates with the commies! amazing. It is indeed interesting how the western media remains silent while SA becomes one vast killing field.

I feel very saddened and helpless as I read about Afrikaners and Souties being tied-up, tortured, raped, and murdered; countless children being left without a father or mother - and it happens entirely too frequently - more so than in the US. Perhaps you could enlighten me - what is the solution? I sometimes think that something like the seperate development of Orania could work. Or what about Namibia? I know its run by SWAPO, the folks you fought on the Angola border, but whites seem to be living okay there.

I’m doubtful that white folks will ever hold the reigns in SA again. If thats the case, then Chinese intervention might be the only thing to keep it from resembling Chad, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Angola, Cameroon,…………you get the point.

I guess its all nice and fuzzy to dream of a rainbow wonderland, where diverse people hang out in diverse places discussing diverse things, but at some point folks have got to pull the crack pipe out of their mouths and embrace reality.

I would love to help. Any suggestions appreciated. Alles van die beste!

Dan

Hey Keith! I agree with everything you said and I hope that if you have the resources you get out of that horrible place! But just for the sake of discussion/debate I have one thing to add….Apartheid was wrong in my view because the Boers never should have brought black slaves from the North to begin with. That was the fatal mistake the whites made in building South Africa. They never should have used blacks from Day 1. Had the Boers built South Africa themselves and not gotten their lives so intertwined with the blacks there may be an all white south africa today. I think this teaches us an important lesson. Instead of a mexican nanny, raise your kids yourself. Instead of a mexican maid, clean your house yourself. Instead of a gardner, mow your own lawn. If you don’t want to get kicked out of your house, don’t invite them in!

By Alice on 3/22/08 at 2:13 am

Ian & Dan: your expressions of concern are appreciated. What can any individual do? Alexander Solzhenitsyn gives the ultimate answer:

“Everyone must decisively stop cooperating with the lie everywhere he sees it himself: where they force him to speak, write, quote or sign,or even simply to vote or even to read.”

This is never easy (although still a lot easier for Americans and even for white South Africans, than it was for Soviet Russians). It is because the South African elite gave in to the lie (that we were Nazi-like oppressors) that we are in this mess. True it took 40 years of sustained leftist bombardment to defeat us, but we took truth too much for granted and forgot how to use it in defence. It seems to me that many whites in America are in a similar condition.

So it’s really great that there are sites like this one on the web that speak the truth about race. Please keep on doing so - even if you think you’re not getting much of a response. The truth is more powerful than you think. And the survival of the West depends on the leftist lie about RACISM being exposed.

What is that lie? Allowing the left to reduce evil to “racism” when really evil is: “bullying”, “murder”, “theft”, “envy” and a host of sins. This allows them (or their favorites), literally, to get away with these other sins. And most mportantly it allows them to associate good feelings of racial kinship (but only if white) with evil, which is their prime aim: they wish to destroy the family (the glue of racial groupings), and order - because it curbs their “absolute freedom” to impose their utopia.

But what can Americans do?

  1. Make sure that Barack Obama is NOT elected President. If he is, blacks here will take this as a license for all-out harassment of whites. Its bad enough already - evey day we are subject to the most outrageous propaganda about white “racism” from the state broadcaster, from government leaders, and not least from indoctrinated and traitorous whites.

It’s outrageous because it is the exact opposite of truth: daily black racism NOT WHITE results in murder and hurt and harm. One white boy cracks (and tragically indiscrimately shoots and kills 4 blacks - but this after many members of his family have been robbed, mugged and murdered by blacks - with no notice being taken of it). All we hear about is White Racism. Of the hundreds of blacks murdering whites hardly a word - and then always with excuses for blacks. It’s outrageous because far from behaving racist-ly whites have bent over backwards to help the blacks succeed…

  1. I’m only an individual but PRAAG (Pro-Afrikaanse Aksie Groep = Pro Afrikaner Action Group) is an Afrikaans organisation which may have some ideas. Here is their English webpage:

Hi Alice, “…the Boers never should have brought black slaves from the North to begin with. …They never should have used blacks from Day 1.”

I couldn’t agree with you more that it would have been better had whites, “…not gotten their lives so intertwined with the blacks”, which is why in the 20th century we legislated Apartheid. It should perhaps be pointed out: the Afrikaans suffix ‘-heid’ is the same as the English suffix ‘-ness’ - so “Apartheid” means “Separateness”, not “Separate Hate”. Unfortunately this has played into the hands of our detractors who insinuate that “hate” is what it means.

But we have to get into a little history, and this is always a difficult subject - more so in this “intellectually Marxist” dominated age. CS Lewis once said in order to maintain our hold on objective truth, for every three modern books one read, one should also read a book from an older era: because every age has its own outlook - “specially good at seeing certain truths and specially liable to make certain mistakes.”

We can’t have a big history lesson but: white settlement began in SA when Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company landed at the Cape in 1652. He met no blacks of the Bantu race, they had not yet reached so far south. He did meet the Hottentots - the Khoi Khoi and soon the Bushman San. These were primitive hunter-gatherers. Some of their descendants (ie of the Bushman San) still live in Namibia and Botswana. Many of these died in various wars with whites, and the other blacks, but some were absorbed into what are known today as the Cape Coloureds (about 4 million of them in the Cape). When the Company (DEIC) freed some of their employees, the Free Burghers, to begin farming the aborigines weren’t interested in farm labour, and so some slaves were imported from the East (Indonesia and Madagascar). These too became part of the Cape Coloured ancestry. More about this ancestry from Dan Roodt:

” …some miscegenation did take place in the first years of Dutch rule at the Cape …However most Coloureds are descendants not of any black-white mix, but of intermarriage between Oriental slaves and the Khoi Khoi…”

As the white population grew (the first Dutch and Germans were joined by French Huguenot refugees around 1688) they explored and trekked further afield. The first contact with the Bantu races took place in the Eastern Cape from about 1750. White views and Xhosa (the Bantu tribe first contacted, and the one to which Mandela belongs, and the one which today oppresses all the other tribes in SA - black and white) views on ownership and theft differed widely: “…theft… with the Xhosas … was a manly sport. Theft was not considered dishonourable as long as the thief was not discovered…”. Well you can see that the black-white relationship in SA was going to be difficult.

Then in the early 1800s, the English arrived. At first they were merely rulers, but then in the 1820s the English settlers arrived. And so some English became the 4th admixture of the Afrikaner nation. Some English have maintained their separate identity. (I am from the English segment, but most of us have relations in both segments of the white community.)

We were now part of the British Empire and when slavery was abolished in the British Empire, it was also abolished here. Black-white clashes in the Eastern Cape became progressively worse. The English missionaries (tending always to be blinded by liberalism) mostly took the part of the blacks, whatever the concrete rights or wrongs of particular situations. The Boers had been promised compensation by the British government for the loss of their slaves, but this was not forthcoming. So the Boers began their Great Trek into the interior of the country. Unexpectedly, many former slaves voluntarily emigrated from the Cape Colony with their former masters.

But the Boers did not re-institute slavery in their independent republics, neither did they enslave the other black tribes who they now came into contact with. Some Boers moved to Natal, and clashed with the Zulus whom they defeated at the Battle of Blood River. Others moved into the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. These areas were not firmly owned by any black tribes at the time - it was the period of the “Mfecane” : a period of tribal warefare and instability. The Boers came into the middle of that.

There is a lot more to it, but already I’ve gone on too long. I just had to point out that South Africa was not built on black slavery. Certainly we should have used less black labour, and imported more whites: but the blacks were there, and wanted work. We couldn’t and didn’t wipe them out. What we needed was Separate Development - Apartheid. But we haven’t been allowed that. No the Xhosas are allowed to despoil everyone and everything, because that makes the liberal-left of the West feel better.

Good, although somewhat crude language (people have to vent their frustrations, being powerless to do little else beside this) website. Join the discussions if you want know-how, plenty of right-minded people (also ex SADF soldiers who experienced it as it was) on there that present the facts as they are, without any PC nonsens. www.southafricasucks.blogspot.com. It is just shameful how liberals in western countries forced the turnover of South Africa to violent, impossibly racist, utterly incompetent blacks. The extraordinary effort liberals make to ignore the abject failure of every single black-run nation, is also shameful. Western liberals will continue to avert their eyes as South Africa spirals downward to an ignorant, corrupt, disease-ridden third world status. They do not care about the senseless destruction of an entire nation, and the millions of people who will needlessly suffer, as long as they put “whitey” in his place.

By James on 3/27/08 at 12:52 am

James is right.

The liberal conscience, which is so anxious to abolish the woes of the world (especially the woes of blacks), is absolutely indifferent to the fate of white people trapped in corrupt and violent African states. Nelson Mandela is worshipped as a living God in the Western media, and the government of South Africa never gets condemned regardless of its incompetence, fraud, racism, and injustice.

The white farmers of Zimbabwe are another case in point: their lands have been confiscated by the state and given to the cronies of Mugabe. As a result, the economy has collapsed. This never gets critically examined by the liberal journalists who influence public opinion in the media.

The show trial of Simon Mann, a white “revolutionary”, now taking place in Equatorial Guinea where the rule of law doesn’t exist, is also ignored by the media.

“South Africa is suffering a ‘brain drain’ as skilled workers - including former Eskom engineers - continue to emigrate to countries like New Zealand and Australia. Approximately one million whites left the nation between 1995 and 2005. Most of those whom emigrated due to high crime and limited economic opportunity were productive workers between the ages of 20 and 40.”

About 4 years ago, I had regular Afrikaner E-mail pal, who I will simply call Miss SA. Miss SA was only 21 and would often speak hopefully about the future of her life in South Africa, and then sadly make comments like: ‘but in reality, I know that I will end up in Australia or the States.’ Overtime, as she got to know me and come see me as “quite sensible for an American,” about certain realities in the world, she would tell me horror stories about friends and relatives who had been victimized by blacks in one way or another. The most disgusting of which was the brutal murder of a family friend in the Pub he owned. For no reason at all, he was shot in the head while on the floor, with his hands tied behind him.

Around that time, the ANC had achieved its 2/3rds majority and she was becoming more and more inclined toward emigrating to another country. She was scheduled to be married and right around the time she would have been, I abruptly stopped receiving E-mails from her. Hopefully, she and her new husband went on a honeymoon to Australia or New Zeeland, and never stopped it? That is my hope, since the alternatives are mostly too horrid to consider; it could be that she simply decided that a married woman shouldn’t be writing some stranger in the USA, or lost regular access to a computer (she wrote me from work only,) but those are the only other broad best case alternatives that I can think of.

In the end, there are two things that I am thankful I was allowed to do for my friend before our sudden parting.

The first, was apologizing for what my country had done to hers; of all the assumed and fabricated horrors of America’s racial “crimes,” one is certainly an unspoken reality, this being the coerced destruction of white leadership in South Africa and Zimbabwe. In our comfortable arrogance, we honestly sold out our own kind to feel sanctimoniously smug in doing the “right thing.” We and our cohorts throughout the West, gleefully wrecked two prosperous and thriving countries and peoples that were our Cold War allies, for the worthless Marxist black parasites in them who would have gladly had us all speaking Russian or Chinese now, if it was left up to them.

The second thing I am grateful for, was strenuously discouraging her from moving to the USA. Indeed, while it would have been good to have a decent pair of young white immigrants here, I knew their chances would be slim at getting in. Moreover, I explained to her that this country was quickly becoming a multicultural and multiracial sewer in its own right, so why not pick a place more solidly white. At the time we were only about 68% white and dropping, and here we are today at about 64%.

Why have someone that young, jump into fire from the frying pan?

As always, God help us all!

Keith,

Your comment made it onto the Racists Say the Darnedest Things page. Serves you right for complaining about black-on-white crime in South Africa. How dare you!

By on 3/29/08 at 9:59 pm

Hello Ian,

I visited the “Racists Say…” page and read the comments. Well - they do get rattled when whites stick with the truth, rather than accept the script for the black fairytale. Those black-supporting leftist racists “say the darndest things”:

“So after the end of apartheid, the crime rate went up by more than 100%. And while you or I would look at that and see an improvement, people like this Keith guy love to pull out those statistics to show that black people can’t run things properly.”-Frank.

Oh I do beg your pardon - an INCREASE in the crime rate is an IMPROVEMENT in a black-run society - I hadn’t realized, silly me!

The other comments are all fact-free emotional blather. They have the nerve to accuse others of “racism”, when all their commenting is merely an exhibition of anti-white attitudes. They cannot refute the fact that OVERWHELMINGLY, whites are the victims of black crime, not vice versa, so they justify black crime. (Note that in the piece I wrote I did not justify the “one-white-boy-who-cracked”, I merely implied that a fraction of the “understanding” which is always extended to the unjustified savage behaviour of blacks, should be extended to him.)

They really didn’t like my opinion that a President Obama would be bad news for SA:

“Ok Keith, here is a deal. You don’t interfere in our elections and we won’t interfere in yours.”-jsonitsac

Well considering the interference of the USA in the affairs of my country, which resulted in a criminal terrorist organisation, the ANC, taking power in a far from fair or free election process, I don’t think I accept the deal. But I will say, that although I still think Obama is bad news, if he is elected, whites will be exposed to more and more black outrageousness ala Rev. Wright, and then at long last hopefully cast off the chains of black chicanery.
